PSV Football Director Reveals Record ‘Transfer’ Price For Manchester United’s January Target

Marcel Brands, the Eredivisie team’s director of football, says that Cody Gakpo will only leave PSV for a “record transfer.” This is because he is still being linked to Manchester United and Real Madrid.

A lot of the best clubs in Europe are reportedly interested in the Dutch player, who scored the first goal three times in the same group stage in Qatar. He is only the second player in World Cup history to do this.

Gakpo, who is 23 and has played in 31 games this season, has 17 goals and eight assists. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in him. United is thought to be the favorite because they tried to sign Gakpo in the last transfer window. However, Brands will want a big sum for the forward.

“When you talk about Cody Gakpo’s price, how many clubs can afford to buy a player of that calibre?” Brands asked the PSV Supporters Association when he met with them.

He said, “You might be referring to 10 or 12 clubs in Europe. In that position, you need a player who can and is willing to spend the money in January, which is usually less busy than in the summer. We still don’t know if it will all happen. He doesn’t have a contract or anything, and no money has been agreed upon. The deals that were made were in place before I was born. It must be a record transfer for PSV, so you can figure out where it’s going.”

Even though the January transfer window is coming up and the Netherlands lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, Brands says there has been no decision made about Gakpo’s future.

“In the media, it seems like all the clubs are lining up, but in reality, we don’t know anything about interest or anything else yet. It’s quiet. I talked to Cody, and he’s going on a ten-day trip. If something happens, Cody or his management might know about it, but we don’t know about it yet,” he added.

Ajax got United to pay £ 81.3 million (€95m) for Antony in August, but Brands thinks that the transfer doesn’t show what PSV might be able to get from Gakpo.

“But that had nothing to do with market conformity. It was a club in a panic and a trainer who insisted on him,” he said.

“In recent years, a lot of players have left for market value, like Gabriel Jesus, who went to Arsenal for $50 million and Erling Haaland, who went to Manchester City for $75 million.”
